Who Is Geowin? Meet the Face Behind World’s Best Kopi

The World’s Best Kopi series usually revolves around one question: how good is the coffee?

This episode takes a different route.

Instead of ranking another cup, Geowin turns the attention onto herself and answers a few questions about who she is, what she likes, and why she is travelling around Singapore trying coffee in the first place.

For anyone who has been following the series through The Drink Journal, this is a useful pause from the tier list. It adds some personality to the person behind the scores and helps explain why the whole project feels more like a personal adventure than a formal coffee review series.

And perhaps most importantly, Geowin gives the most convincing answer yet to the question of why she is qualified to rank coffee:

Absolutely nothing.

She Is 20 and Recently Graduated From Poly

Geowin begins with the basics.

She is 20 years old and has recently graduated from polytechnic.

Right now, she says she is taking a gap year and “finding myself,” or perhaps more accurately, figuring out what she wants to do next.

That uncertainty is actually part of the reason she is doing the World’s Best Kopi series.

She describes the current period as one of trying things, figuring life out and seeing where things lead. Instead of pretending to have everything planned, she is simply using the time to explore.

That gives the series a slightly different context.

This is not a professional barista systematically judging Singapore’s coffee scene. It is a young coffee lover going around Singapore, tasting drinks, forming opinions, having fun and occasionally getting frightened by giant hands coming through walls.

Which, frankly, is more entertaining.

A Coffee Project Built Around Curiosity

The World’s Best Kopi series fits neatly into the wider world covered by The Drink Journal: drinks are often interesting because of the people and experiences surrounding them, not simply because of technical tasting notes.

Geowin’s approach is very much based on that idea. The coffee matters, but so does the cafe, the experience and the story around each stop.

Her Favourite Food Is Mala Tang

When asked about her favourite food, Geowin does not hesitate for long.

Mala tang.

There is, however, one problem.

She immediately points out that mala tang can be extremely fattening and contains a lot of calories.

Her solution to that problem is refreshingly straightforward:

“But you only live once, so just eat whatever you like.”

This may not qualify as nutritional advice, but it is certainly consistent.

There is also something fitting about someone spending her gap year trying 100 coffees while simultaneously declaring that life is too short not to eat what you enjoy.

Taste first. Consequences later.

It is probably worth mentioning that this philosophy has limits, but as far as an enjoyable bowl of mala tang is concerned, Geowin appears to have made her decision.

Why Is Geowin Credible Enough to Rank Coffee?

Then comes perhaps the most important question of the entire World’s Best Kopi project.

Why should anyone trust Geowin to rank coffee?

Is she a trained barista?

No.

Has she spent years professionally cupping specialty coffee?

Apparently not.

Does she possess some secret coffee qualification that gives her rankings unquestionable authority?

Again, no.

Her answer is simply:

“Nothing.”

There is a pause, a smile, and then the actual explanation.

She is doing it for fun.

“I just do it for fun because I have no life,” she jokes, before following it with the real reason:

“I just love coffee.”

That might actually be the most useful thing to understand about the series.

She Is Not Pretending to Be a Coffee Expert

The World’s Best Kopi tier list is not presented as a professional industry judging panel.

Geowin is not claiming that an A-tier coffee represents some scientifically measurable standard of excellence. Her rankings are personal reactions from someone who genuinely enjoys coffee and wants to try as much of Singapore’s coffee scene as possible.

That distinction matters.

It explains why body language, atmosphere and immediate reactions play such a large role in each episode. Sometimes the most revealing moment is not a technical description of acidity or extraction. It is Geowin taking a sip and immediately looking disappointed.

Or smiling.

Or saying that Starbucks “never fails.”

She has no formal reason whatsoever to be ranking Singapore’s coffees.

And she does it anyway because she loves coffee.

That may actually be the entire charm of World’s Best Kopi.

It is not someone claiming to possess the definitive answer to Singapore’s best coffee.

It is someone trying to find her own answer, one cup at a time.

Now that we know a little more about the person holding the microphone, the hunt can continue.

There are plenty more cafes left to visit, plenty more cups to rank, and almost certainly several more moments where Geowin’s facial expression will tell us exactly what she thinks before she says a word.
