Punch Room Tokyo, Tokyo
Inside the Experience
Walking into Punch Room Tokyo feels like entering a parallel universe — one where the energy of Ginza fades behind walnut walls, saturated velvet and low, seductive lighting. The bar opened in 2024 as part of The Tokyo EDITION, instantly injecting the district’s luxury landscape with Ian Schrager’s signature swagger. Architect Kengo Kuma’s touch is everywhere: clean geometry, sculptural textures and a theatrical sense of depth that turns each corner of the room into a moment.
Inspired by the refined exclusivity of 19th-century London private clubs, the space is intimate and masculine but softened by jewel-tone velvet in mustard, emerald and electric blue. Seating is low-slung and plush, designed for conversation. It has that rare energy where everyone looks like they’re exactly where they should be — sipping, talking, sinking deeper into the night.
Punch, one of the world’s earliest forms of mixed drinking, forms the backbone of the bar’s identity. But here, it is reframed through a distinctly Japanese lens via the Wonderland Menu, which treats every cocktail as a meditation on the five foundational pillars of punch: spirit, citrus, sugar, spice and tea.
Under the guidance of head bartender Yasuhiro Kawakubo — a veteran of Tokyo’s elite bar scene — these historic pillars become playful, sophisticated and deeply local. Drinks are built with the clarity and technique of Japanese bartending, but carry whimsical twists that feel contemporary and expressive.
A gin and tonic transforms into the Wasabi Sonic, layered with sencha tea and a whisper-soft hit of wasabi root that feels more aromatic than spicy.
The crowd favourite, Kappa & Yuzu, pairs tequila with doburoku — a rustic farmhouse-style rice brew — brightened with yuzu, cucumber and vanilla.
Elsewhere, punches are elevated with rare Japanese citruses, fragrant teas and small-batch spirits sourced from boutique producers across the country.
One of Punch Room’s defining rituals is its table-side punch bowl service. Order the same drink with two or more people, and it arrives at your table in a gleaming silver bowl with an elegantly crafted ladle. The experience feels celebratory, intimate and nostalgic — like sharing a secret among friends.
The team’s hospitality is quiet, considerate and deeply attentive. Guests are often welcomed with shooters or teas, and each drink is introduced with its context: why it exists, what it references, and how it fits into punch’s long global journey. Even during events or busy nights, service remains composed and warm. Reservations are recommended, but early-evening walk-ins sometimes find a seat.
The food menu is compact, but strong — guests frequently praise the karaage (often declared the best in Tokyo), alongside elevated snacks that pair beautifully with the punch-forward experience.
Punch Room Tokyo feels like a place built for lingering. A luxurious hideaway in the heart of Ginza where time slows, conversations deepen and cocktails arrive with the calm confidence of a bar that already knows its place in the city’s hierarchy. It’s a Japanese reinterpretation of a global concept — and in true Tokyo fashion, it may have just become its finest version.
